Optics 1, Inc.

Optics 1, Inc. was founded in 1987. The company headquarters and Commercial Systems Division operations are located in California. Optics 1 also has a Defense Systems Division which is located in Manchester, NH. Optics 1 designs, develops, produces and supports precision optical assemblies, subsystems and integrated systems for leading global technology customers. Optics 1 has a presence in diverse market sectors including military, medical, homeland security, biotech, industrial and consumer electronics. They had 36 employees and sales of $9 Million at the start of the project.

Issue/Needs
Optics 1 customers required the company to design and develop custom optical products while maintaining high volume production capabilities. As a traditional research and development company they found themselves needing assistance to rapidly scale-up their manufacturing capability.

Implementation Highlights
CMTC first identified local contract manufacturers that would be able to provide the high volume production capability sought by Optics 1 customers. CMTC then assisted Optics 1 in the recruitment of key professional personnel to handle their rapidly growing business. The project began in July of 2003 and lasted 18 months.

Improvement Description
The strategy developed by CMTC and Optics 1 management allowed the company to deliver a high level of product customization while providing, through local contract manufacturers, volume production capabilities. As a direct result, Optics 1 was able to capture and deliver a number of additional projects that they otherwise would not have had the resources or capabilities to deliver.

Financial and Investment Impact
Optics 1 increased their annual sales by $4 Million and was able to hire an additional 6 employees.
