Issue/Needs
Jon’s Tool and Die was directed by ITW/CIP to have an ISO 9001:2000 registered Quality Management System (QMS) by May 1, 2004 or risk losing their business. The owners had two options; implement an ISO 9000 QMS within five months or close the business.

Implementation Highlights
In early January 2004, a CMTC consultant took a quick view assessment of the product and processes at JTD and developed a 4-month project plan to implement an ISO 9001:2000 QMS. Working with the JTD
Office Manager, a quality manual, a set of operational procedures, work instructions, support forms and records were developed and implemented, all designed to help the company run more efficiently. The Office Manager was trained on ISO 9000 requirements, corrective and preventive action, and internal auditing, all new activities at JTD. With only days to spare, NSF-ISR, an internationally recognized QMS
registrar, conducted a compliance audit at JTD.

Improvement Description
After working with CMTC, JTD successfully passed their audit and were recommended for ISO 9000 registration. This allowed them to retain their primary customer. Prior to implementation of the project, JTD had no documented procedures or work instruction. The implementation of documented procedures helped JTD ensure that employees would focus on the right job at the right time. JTD was able to develop an improved process for handling customer complaints and develop an effective company-wide corrective action process. JTD also developed preventive action and internal audit processes.

Financial and Investment Impact
As a result of this project, JTD was able to retain sales of $980,000 by achieving ISO 9000 registration. Further, JTD’s retention of sales allowed the company to not only retain but increase their employee base by 5%, bringing the total number of employees to 20.
