Avalon Mfg

Established in 2023, Avalon Mfg is a veteran-owned and operated technology company that specializes in manufacturing automation solutions. Based in Los Angeles, Avalon Mfg’s production line is fully automated in order to efficiently produce the highest quality parts for the aerospace, space, and defense industries.

Challenge

As a start-up organization, Avalon Mfg experienced many challenges early in its development. One of the biggest challenges was obtaining a critical quality certification. AS9100 Certification was required by most of Avalon Mfg’s customers which made getting certified essential to Avalon’s success. Having partnered with CMTC at his last company, Avalon Mfg CEO Matt Sand knew CMTC had deep industry expertise and could help his new manufacturing organization acquire the necessary certification.

Solution

CMTC worked closely with Avalon Mfg to guide them through the AS9100 Certification process, beginning with a comprehensive project overview and gap analysis to identify discrepancies between the company’s existing processes and the AS9100 requirements. From there, CMTC developed a detailed implementation plan to track progress and gathered critical information to create or update the required management system documentation. As Avalon Mfg refined their operational and product realization procedures for Section 8 of the AS9100D standard, CMTC provided ongoing coaching and document creation and reviews to ensure alignment. To solidify this foundation, CMTC conducted training on the finalized management system documentation, facilitated comprehensive implementation training, and completed an internal audit and management review, ensuring Avalon was fully prepared for certification.

Impact

With CMTC’s expert guidance, Avalon Mfg’s new AS9100 Certification brought the organization instant credibility, attracting high-value inbound leads and positioning them as a trusted supplier in the industry. The AS9100 Certification also led to improved quality and reliability resulting in less rework and fewer returns. As a result of their work with CMTC, Avalon Mfg estimates $750,000 in increased sales and $63,000 in cost savings. Avalon Mfg also estimates a total investment of $350,000, including $50,000 in new products/processes, $150,000 in equipment, $50,000 in IT, and $100,000 in workforce development/employee training.

“It was fantastic working with CMTC – they have a great support team. As a manufacturer, it sometimes feels like we are on an island; and CMTC really helps us get out of that. California manufacturing wouldn't be what it is without CMTC.”
