Manufacturing Day®, an initiative designed to inspire the next generation of manufacturers, arrives October 4, 2019. The annual MFG Day (which can be held anytime during the month) involves thousands of manufacturers across the country holding events, tours, activities, and more. Last year, in California alone, more than 250 sites registered as event hosts and more than 330 manufacturers and support organizations participated in or sponsored events throughout the month of October.

Manufacturing Day Arrives October 4: How to Host or Participate in an Event

Manufacturers across the country are preparing for Manufacturing Day® 2019, or MFG Day. Arriving October 4 this year, MFG Day is designed to inspire and recruit the next generation of manufacturers. The annual event began in 2012, and was created to dispel the notion that all manufacturing jobs are “dark, dirty, and dangerous,” and to show students, businesspeople, politicians, and the media that manufacturing offers some of the most exciting and innovative work environments around.

MFG DAY 2018: A Win for California and the Country

The seventh annual Manufacturing Day was a resounding success in California! MFG DAY continues to draw more and more participants each year, and 2018 was no exception, with nearly 2,800 events held across the country. In the Golden State, which boasts the nation’s largest manufacturing sector, it was all hands on deck in celebration of MFG DAY; over 250 sites registered as event hosts and an additional 330+ manufacturers and support organizations, including schools, stakeholders, and other organizations, participated in or sponsored events throughout the month of October.

Dark, dirty, dangerous. Unfortunately, this outdated perception of manufacturing persists to this day, and it can keep away new talent. By 2025, nearly 25 percent of the United States population is expected to be aged 60 or older, meaning many manufacturing workers will be leaving the factory floor. This makes attracting the next generation of workers critical to ensuring the industry remains vibrant. With this thought in mind, the National Association of Manufacturers and the Manufacturing Institute developed National Manufacturing Day.
