Beranek, Inc.

Beranek Inc., located in Torrance, California, is an established family business specializing in the production and supply of precision manufactured components to major blue chip customers, particularly in the aerospace industry. It has a wealth of experience within this market sector and the top management believes that its future will be based on developing partnerships with customers and suppliers by improving its processes and management capabilities. Beranek employs approximately 25 employees.

Challenge

Due to a trend in the aerospace industry to become AS certified, Beranek decided to transition their quality management system from ISO 9001:2000 to AS9100 Rev.B. Some major customers such as GE Aerospace Engines, UTC, Boeing and Airbus require registration. While other aerospace Primes encourage compliance to AS9100, Beranek’s culture strives to be at the leading edge of its industry. In 2005, they determined that compliance to AS9100 will not only give the company a competitive advantage in the marketplace, but will also serve to be the foundation for business and operational improvements.

Solution

The twelve phase project started in September 2005. CMTC first performed a gap audit to identify the gaps between Beranek’s existing quality system and the AS9100 standard. Based upon the findings, CMTC generated a 60 hour employee training schedule covering 12 topics. During these interactive training sessions, Beranek and CMTC developed the AS9100 documentation and implemented the new system. To finish the project, CMTC provided internal audit training and assisted with Beranek’s internal auditing and management review programs. Beranek passed its registration audit in November 2006 with 100% compliance.

Improvement Description

In addition to their registration accomplishment, the development of an AS9100 quality management system has resulted in improved internal efficiencies and the increased ability to sell in the aerospace marketplace.

Financial and Investment Impact

Beranek has increased annual sales by $370,000 and increased investment in plant and equipment by $330,000. In addition, the increase in sales has resulted in adding two new employees.

"We are very pleased with the assistance that CMTC gave us, we couldn’t have done it without them."
